On the 7th and 8th of November the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Weddell Sea and Dronning Maud Land (WSDML) regional working group held its annual virtual workshop.
This workshop, chaired by OCEAN:ICE's very own Markus Janout (AWI), brought together regional researchers from around the globe to discuss ongoing work and upcoming opportunities in this critical region of the Southern Ocean.
Science speakers covered a range of topics from biogeochemistry to physics, ice-ocean interactions and ecosystems. Also discussed were ongoing initiatives and coming expeditions to the region, with discussion around improving synergies between research groups and improving ship time utilisation. Andrew Meijers presented ongoing and upcoming OCEAN:ICE science incorporating the region, highlighting the upcoming WP5 mooring retrievals, WP1 float deployments, WP2 ice shelf cavity work and datasets and coordinated modelling efforts in WP1, WP4, 5 and 6.
